What is the number one subject not taught in school but makes all the difference for workplace culture? We go to school and learn about all the necessary subjects to graduate, but there is one important piece missing necessary for life-long success. It is not the lack of talent; employees have the necessary skills to perform their job. You see, it may seem trivial, and eye rolls ensue when this subject is broached but avoiding this issue can cost a lot of money. Perhaps the focus of attention is needed for:
- Amount of gossip
- Complaining
- Lack of accountability
- Absence of empathy
- Finger pointing and blaming
- Inflated Egos
Poor company culture is like a preventable disease. It can be reversed if treated properly. Providing training on Social and Emotional Intelligence is one of the most effective ways to turn around a toxic environment. I have found it is most successful if training starts from the top down. Staff who have a downline need to realize the power of, the positive and negative effect they have. Did you ever have a situation where someone from within the organization was promoted due to their success as an individual contributor only to find out their skills as a manager were never considered? Soft skills required to manage others is necessary to serve their downline and help them grow. This does not mean they are a lost cause! Training on SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) could make all the difference in the world.Wellness programs touch on many areas but often leave out Social and Emotional Intelligence training. We all need it, some more than others. Yes, this is a wellness topic! I won’t promise with training the problem will be fixed overnight, but consistent awareness will bring about change for the better. Our egos are strong and take time to move it off center stage. If you want to keep your workplace culture from crumbling, inject quarterly SEL training. You won’t regret it. p.s. Middle school drama isn’t much different than what is happening in most organizations. 😉Contact me today for a no-obligation, informational conversation today. Click Here!
